Out of the woods Design

My name is Gavin Then and I am a recent resident to the Comox Valley from the beautiful town of Smithers in the north central region of BC. As in Smithers, the Comox valley is filled with the magnificence of the mountains, forests, glaciers, water, skiing and everything that a creative soul requires to be free to explore. And I have! Running every meter of the trails in beautiful Cumberland where you can bound through new and old growth forests and if you take the time you can hear the stories the trees have to tell and the rush of water falls all around you and know that you are safe, each allowing you to share the space. I have skied and hiked the alpines of Mount Washington to Albert Edward, Mount Cain to the Sayward forest loop, Raft Cove to Tofino and each place has its unique voice in the trees that inhabit it; Fir, cedar, spruce, pine, arbutus and underneath it all is salel. It will open for you only if it wants you in otherwise it keeps the forest floor as it should be. I have sat at peace on the quiet beaches leaning against giant trees and logs that have been uprooted and carried to this location by the force of nature. Had the privilege to watch the sun set behind Mount Washington in the summer and Mount Cameron and Apps in the winter just down the road from my home in Royston. This is the inspiration that goes into each piece I create. I will observe a piece wood for quite some time and it will either speak to me or not. If not, it simply goes back on the rack for the future. If it should speak then it dictates what it needs to say and be and I am simply the tool that allows its story to be shared. With that, each piece that I create is unique and all about the wood. I will rarely do multiples of any piece of furniture as each piece of wood is unique.
